Lögberg-Heimskringla - 17.03.1995, Síða 26
26 • Lögberg-Heimskringla • Föstudagur 17. mars 1995 Skiing at Snæfells- jökull kiing is a sport which has enjoyed increasing pop- ularity in Iceland, and Icelanders have taken to the ski slopes in increasing numbers. Foreign ^^"'^■">tourists have also discovered the excellent skiing conditions in Iceland and are coming in increasing numbers. One of the places which is beginning to attract the ski champions is Snæfellsjökull. Snæfellsjökul is one of the most beautiful mountains in Iceland. The glacier’s dignity is reason enough for many to be filled with awe at the sight of this jewel of nature and have looked longingly to this white pearl and wanted to ski on her slopes. Now this has become possible. Tryggvi Konráðsson and his parents operate the travel service “Snjófell” at Arnarstapi. They have organized trips up on the glacier for the last two || ':k years and have used nine snowmobiles and one snow- plow which can take up to 20 people each time. They also run a restaurant and offer overnight accommodation. They have now been allowed to operate a ski lift up the mountain. A group of ski enthusiasts from Reykjavík and ísa- ijörður decided to try out the slopes last year. They used modern technology and flew by helicopter up the moun- tain. The trip took only four minutes. The group got the weather they had dreamed of, calm with a bright sky. The view from the glacier was spectacular. To the north the Barðaströnd and Breiðafjörd displayed their finery and on the other side of Breidafjord the Akra-mountain and Faxa- gulf were bathed in the sun- light. The view was so spec- tacular that it became diffi- cult for the champions to tear themselves away from the top even though the shining white slopes below were Contlnued on next page
