Farm vaca- tions, camping, fish- ing, hunting and wildlife viewing make this area an exciting vacation destina- tion for the outdoor enthusiast. Whether you are just passing through, staying a few hours or a few days, it’s yours to explore and enjoy. The com- munities of this area offer a wide range of services, festivals, friendly people and plenty of country hospitality. Only 40 minutes from Winnipeg, visit St. Laurent for their annual Metis Days festival celebrating the unique early period of Manitoba’s history and Metis culture. St Laurent is known for its excellent cottage and beach develop- ments. Lundar, the home of the Canada Goose, is the regional service centre in the RM of Coldwell. Of interest to trav- ellers are the museum, special events, the farmers market and a golf course. Recreation and camping facilities include a junior Olympic swimming pool and the Lundar Beach and Recreation Park. Lundar hosts the “All Canadian Goose Shoot” every fall, as well as the summer fair and winter car- nival. Nearby is the Swan Creek Fish Hatchery, one of only three in Manitoba. Visitors to Eriksdale can enjoy a visit to the museum or to McEwen Memorial Park which offers ovemight camping or a quiet place to stop for a picnic. Eriksdale hosts an annual fall com roast and several major ball tour- naments. The Narrows connecting the north and south basins of Lake Manitoba offers resorts, camping, and superb fishing. It is from this point that the Ancient Cree called “Manitobau” or from “Channel of the Great Spirit”, which the province gets its name. Ashern, the service centre of Highway 6 and home of the Sharptail Grouse, offers a complete range of activities and events. Visit the museum or attend the annual Fun Fair. Play a round of golf, stop by the cattle auc- tion, or shop at the local stores. Sharptail Park offers ovemight camp- ing. Ashern hosts the internationally recognized “One-Box Sharptail Hunt”, during the fall. Visit Silver Bay, the local beach and cottage area. The Village of Moosehorn, 13 km. north of AShern, offers a museum, motel and local services. Plan to visit the Watchorn Provincial Recreation Park which boasts excellent swimming, overnight camping and a boat launch. Steep Rock Beach (above) and Campground, twö and one half hours Northwest of Winnipeg is an excellent. camping and fishing area. Boasting a superb beach and picturesque lime- stone cliffs, it offers ovemight camping, boat launching, inland marina, board- walk, restaurant and several stores. For those with families, there is an excel- lent children’s entertainment and play- ground area. Further north, the Fairford Dam and fish ladder are a unique attraction of the area. The Davis Point Game Farm has buffalo, elk, wild boar and deer. The Communities of Gypsumville and St. Martin offer a full range of ser- vices and are the last chance for food and fuel on the route to Northern Manitoba. Fishing supplies, guiding and boat rentals are available at Anama Bay. Highway 7 Heart of the Interlake ithout a doubt, the areas along Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba offer a remarkable variety of magnificent scenery. However, the land between the lakes also has its unique attractions. History, wildlife, natural attractions and summer fairs and cultural festivals offer something for everyone. Highway 7 — it’s a natur- al vacation destination. The communities along Highway 7 offer a host of events and attractions which appeal to a variety of interests, come and visit — you’ll be glad you did! Stonewall, only 20 minutes away from Winnipeg was the centre of lime- stone quarries which operated from the early 1880’s to the late 60’s. Although no longer the economic mainstay of Stonewall, the quarries influence is still evident throughout the town today. The beautiful old stone buildings, the celebration of the annual Quarry Days and the Stonewall Quarry Park are a tribute to its past. The Park, Visitor Centre and Kinsmen Lake make Stonewall an attractive day trip or extended vacation destinations. A few kilometers east of Stonewall is Oak Hammock Marsh, the home of Ducks Unlimited Interpretive and Conservation Centre. This 3,500 hectare marsh supports tens of thou- sands of waterfowl during migrations and is home to more than 260 species of birds and 25 mammals. The annuál Waterfowl Celebration is held on loca- tion in mid-May of each year. The Town of Teulon, celebrating its 75th Anniversary in 1994, is home to the Interlake, Regional Arts Centre, Teulon Museum, Teulon/Rockwood Green Acres Recreation Park and the Teulon Golf and Country Club.
