Sjá m.a. Lýður Björns- son: „Eldur í Aðalstræti." SUMMARY Hillebrandtshús, built by the merchant Frederic Hillebrandt, is the oldest existing house in Blönduós in the northern part of Iceland. The house was imported prefabricated but the question remains whether that happened in 1733 or 1877. According to local Iegend the house, at that time an old one, was moved to Blönduós, then newly established by royal decree as a village with rights as a trading centre, from Skagaströnd, its nearest town. If that holds true, the original parts of the house are 150 years older than the first settle- ment in Blönduós itself and it was probably built by an association of merchants operating at Skagaströnd in 1733 (Félag Iausakaupmanna) and originally housed a small shop. Enquiries concerning the truthfulness of the legend form the main part of the article. Written material by local writers was studied as well as archival material and documents from Blönduós, Reykjavík and Copenhagen. A thorough investigation of the construction
